Major General Yair Golan becomes new head of Northern Command

Outgoing Northern Command chief: North is quietest it has been since country's founding

Maj. Gen. Yair Golan was appointed as the new commander of the IDF's Northern Command in a ceremony held on Monday (July 11) at the Chief of the General Staff's office in Tel Aviv.
The celebration was attended by Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz as well as members of the General Staff Forum.
Maj. Gen. Golan is taking the position that Maj. Gen. Gadi Eizenkot served in for five years.
"Over the past five years, the IDF in general and the Northern Command in particular have undergone an important process of studying and investigation due to the desire to make improvements from deficiencies that were exposed during the Second Lebanon War," Maj. Gen. Eizenkot said. "Along with commanders in the field, we created a new security reality, which is the best and quietest since the founding of the country."
"[Maj. Gen. Golan] is the right man in the right place and I am certain that he will lead the Northern Command to new achievements," Maj. Gen. Eizenkot added.
Maj. Gen. Golan was the head of the Home Front Command for the past three and a half years.
Maj. Gen. Golan thanked Defense Minister Barak and Lt. Gen. Gantz for the trust that they have placed in him.
Lt. Gen. Gantz told Maj. Gen. Eizenkot that "your actions have created a level of quiet that the north has never known."
Lt. Gen. Gantz wished Maj. Gen. Golan success, saying to him that "as someone who was the commander of the Home Front Command, you are now faced with the challenge of keeping war away from Israel's citizens."
